Difference between POLITENESS and RESPECT

When you are polite, you say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. You may hold the door open for somebody, or let them go through the door first. You speak to people nicely.
However, these are only things that you do. You may not have a good opinion of these people. You may not respect them.
When you have respect for someone, you admire that person for their good qualities or think that they are important and deserve to be treated politely.
So, of course, if you respect someone, you want to be nice to them and talk to them politely.
But don’t forget, it’s possible to be polite and disrespectful at the same time:

  • Would you be so kind as to go to hell?

See what I mean? It’s a perfectly polite request, however, its message is disrespectful.
