How many idioms should a native speaker know?

idea, concept, conception, thought

As many as possible!

Idioms help to express things in a more creative way!

Here are three of my favourites:

1. To beat around the bush

When someone is not specific about what they really mean or want to say

  • I don’t like to beat around the bush. When I don’t like somebody, I tell them honestly!

What does Beat Around the Bush mean?

2. Speak of the devil!

When you are talking about somebody and then they suddenly arrive.

  • Speak of the devil! We were just talking about you, Tom! Nothing bad, I promise!

3. Piece of cake

When something is really easy to do.

  • You want me to learn 3 idioms a day to improve my English? Piece of Cake!

Try to study idioms for fun, they are the most entertaining way of speaking a language! When you start to use these in natural speech, your English-speaking friends will be very impressed.
