How to use a Rice cooker?

Most of the time, rice cookers are really basic to use. Even though they (obviously!) cook rice, they can be used to cook many different foods, including pasta and meat, and the cooking method differs a little bit depending on what you are making.

Rice cookers cook in part by using steam. Because you are not moving the food in the pot for a long time (up to 20-30 minutes), you need to prevent them from burning by adding water.

For most foods, including rice, you should add water to two places – inside the pot itself, and outside the pot (the thing that you can take out of the rice cooker) in the space between the pot and the bottom of the cooker, where the heating source is located.

For rice, follow the water lines if there are lines on the pot. If there are not, a good rule of thumb is to use enough water to cover the rice you have, plus your hand if you rest it lightly on top of the rice (make sure the level of the rice is smooth!).

If you are heating up food, you usually do not need to add that much water. Add just enough to prevent the food from getting burnt.

If you are making soup or noodles, obviously you need to add much more water into the pot. Add enough to make however much soup you would like (plus a little extra for the water that will evaporate).

Once the water is added, most of the time you just need to press the start button. The rice cooker should be able to time itself with its own timer, and will stop once the food is ready! Bon appetit!
