The symbols on a typical keyboard actually vary with the origin of it, or its intended place of use. This is because certain symbols, especially the one for currency (such as $), is different.

In general, the only key that varies is that currency one, which shares a key with the number 4. The other number and symbol pairs are below:

  • 1 and !
  • 2 and @
  • 3 and #
  • 5 and %
  • 6 and ^
  • 7 and &
  • 8 and *
  • 9 and (
  • 0 and )

The currency key could share the same key with any of these symbols: $ (dollar), € (Euro), £ (pound), and ¥ (yen, yuan).  A full list of currency symbols can be found here: http://www.xe.com/symbols.php
