Run Into – Come Across Difference

These two have very similar meanings:

Run into
1) When you encounter something without expecting it. Usually this means you have direct interaction with whatever this is.

  • I ran into Susie today at the market, it was a nightmare! We were talking for an hour!

2) When you are running and physically make contact with another person or thing.

  • He wasn’t looking where he was going, so he ran into a wall. It hurt a lot!

 

Come across
When you encounter something without expecting it. This doesn’t mean you necessarily have interaction as usually this is used for things and not people.

  • I drove two miles down the road and came across a horse in the middle of the road!

In summary, come across is generally used for things rather than people and usually means you don’t interact with whatever it is.
