There are a few words of wisdom when choosing a career. One is ‘If you do what you love, you won’t have to work a day in your life.’ Another is ‘Do you live to work or work to live?’ Both of these phrases convey the idea that you should not choose a career that you would hate or find boring. An ideal career would give you time for the most important parts of life: family, friends, and other things that you value the most. It should be a way to make money and it should not take up all parts of your life.

‘Career’ is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.”

It should be noted that once you choose a career, you do not need to stick to it forever. Something better might come up and there is nothing wrong with trying something new. However, you would want to be ready for the new job. This means being educated in all that is involved in it. You can do this by asking others about it, taking classes at a college, being an intern, or simply Googling the job and what it entails. Think about the information you receive and make an informed decision.

One of my career goals is to work enough to cover the costs of living (food, housing, occasional travel) without going into debt. I also, however, do not want to work too much because I would then be ‘burnt-out’ and there would not be enough time for more important things.

A job can be more short-term while a career usually spans several years or even decades. We can use a software engineer as example of the difference between a career and a job. ‘Software engineer’ is someone’s career. ‘Software engineer for the iPhone at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California’ is a specific job. If that person is later a software engineer for Microsoft, they still have the same career but now with a different job.

A ‘career cluster’ is group of different jobs that are within the same general career.

A ‘career objective’ is a statement that describes what your responsibilities and occupation will be if you are successful in your career.
