’Get the message’ means to understand the real meaning of what somebody has said.

  • “I told everyone we had to get up early the next day, but my boyfriend didn’t get the message and kept talking to a guy. I was so bored.”

In this example, when the girl said they had to get up early, what she really meant was that ’she wanted to go home’. Her boyfriend didn’t understand what she really meant. He didn’t get the message.

  • “You know, Mary and Joe like keeping a tidy house.”
  • “OK, I get the message. I won’t take my dogs with me when we visit them.”

In this example, the second speaker understands what the real message of the first speaker was. She didn’t want him to take the dogs when they visit Mary and Joe.
