What is the meaning of ‘more is up’ or ‘good is up’?

‘More is up’ (or ‘good is up’) is a conventional metaphor that suggests that ‘the more of something there is, the higher up it is’ or that ‘the less of something there is, the lower down it is.’ You can see it in sentences like these:

  • House prices are on the rise. (they are going up)
  • My income went down. (it became less)
  • Exports are down. (they are fewer than before)

 
It’s about using the idea of UP and DOWN to express the idea of GOOD and BAD.
