If anything is done or sold ‘under the table’ this means that it is done secretly or even illegally.

For example, a person who does informal jobs or cash in hand jobs such as selling products from their home, babysitting, dog walking or other freelance jobs may get paid under the table and avoid paying tax. In British English, the term ‘under the counter’ is used.

Here are some more examples of the phrase being used:

  • The introduction of particular industry investments aimed at decreasing under the table jobs has benefited the economy hugely as there are fewer people avoiding paying tax and more taxpayers contributing to society.
  • The governor was accused of receiving money under the table to fund the upcoming campaign for the governor race.
  • Many teenagers buy alcohol and cigarettes under the table because it is illegal for people under 18 years old to buy alcohol over the counter in stores.
