What does “to fess up” mean?

To fess up is a phrasal verb and it means to confess or admit to doing something that you probably shouldn’t have done or will have negative consequences attached to it.

 

For example:

  • The students finally fessed up and told their teacher that they were the ones who had eaten all of the cakes that had been prepared for the school bake sale.
  • The employee has fessed up to using company funds for personal purposes and will now have to face the consequences. 
  • Unfortunately, the consultant lost her job and will now have to fess up to her husband as they won’t be able to afford the down payment for their dream home anymore.
