Although these words can be used as similes for one another, in particular sentences recover has specific and different meanings.

Heal

It is a verb that means a wound, injury, or other bodily damage will get better. It is specific to an animal or person’s physical or mental health.

  • This medicine will quickly heal the injury.
  • It will take many weeks for you to heal properly.
  • Her body is healing nicely after the operation.

A common idiom in English with the word heal is: “time heals all wounds.”

It means, that as time passes, old injuries and scars fade, even emotional wounds become less painful. For example, a friend maybe says or does something that hurts you, over time the pain of their actions should lessen.

Doctors and other people who practice some kind of medicine are sometimes called Healers. This is because their treatments can help a person get better or heal.

Recover

Recover, which is also a verb, similarly can describe a person who is getting better from an injury. However, it’s meaning is broader and can be applied to things, not just people or animals.

  • He is making a fast recovery after the operation.
  • We hope you recover soon!

It can also describe something as that has been found again or gotten back if it was stolen, taken.

  • I hope the police recover my Passport.
  • They will never recover all the money that was stolen.

Similarly, we can use it for a period of time too.

  • The basketball team is too many points behind; they will not be able to recover in time.
  • We need to recover the time we lost after the car broke down.

Recover is sometimes used as another word for remove or extract.

  • After we recover the coal, it can be exported.
  • This special drainage pit will recover the oil and grease that is in the water.

Therefore, heal, is the word we would use when speaking about a medical or personal problem. Recovery, however, is broader in its meaning and can be applied to things as well.

Healing – “The process where the cells in the body regenerate and repair themselves”

Recovery – “The act or process of regaining or repossession of something lost. Return to normal health. A return to former status.” 2 These definitions make more of a distinction between the two words.

Healing more specifically implies physical healing of cells and tissues. Recovery is more focused on a return to normal function or former state.

There are many steps involved in returning a patient to their former state and wound healing is the first of these steps.
