The winter solstice is the day of the year with the shortest amount of daylight. Because of the differences in daylight levels in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, it happens at a different time depending on where you live.

The winter solstice for the Northern Hemisphere is typically in the later half of December, around December 21. For people in the Southern Hemisphere, it is around June 21. The exact date can vary a little bit, but usually not by more than a few days.
