Are seasons capitalized?

This is an excellent question as it is confusing for many English learners. To begin with, the word seasons has various meanings. First, the four weather patterns summer, autumn, winter, spring are known as seasons. As common nouns, they do not need to be capitalized unless they begin a sentence.

However, seasons are often used as Proper Nouns too, and this is where the confusion arises because now they need to be capitalized, for example.

  • The Winter Olympics are in two years.
  • We have tremendous crowds come to our annual Spring Festival.
  • During the Autumn(Fall) Sale, we will lower the cost of our summer clothing.
  • For our Summer Runout Sale, we are slashing the prices of our cars.

We can also use winter and summer as verbs, autumn and spring are only nouns when speaking about seasons.

Here are some examples.

  • Many of my friends winter in a warmer country. (This means that they go to live in another country during the months of winter.)
  • I had summered in Europe when I was hiking.

The second use of seasons is a verb. We can season our food with salt, that adds flavor. However, this has given rise to the noun Seasonings, a collective name for the various Herbs and Spices used in cooking.

  • The chef had many different Seasonings.

Because of this crossover in meanings and words, seasons is a surprisingly tricky word to learn how to use. In conclusion, it is essential to correctly understand the context of a sentence to know what type of season it is.
