Block letter format

Block letter format is a format that people typically use when writing formal business letters.

Rather than talking about the content of the letter, it is concerned with how the words in the letter are arranged. When you change a letter to block format, the text is aligned to the left and single spaced.

All the text will start at the same place on the left side of the page, but end at different places on the right side of the page depending on the length of the sentence. The body of the text should also be single spaced, except when changing to a new paragraph, which should have double spaces between them.

Block format letters also typically include separate areas for the addresses of the author and the intended recipient, a greeting, multiple body paragraphs, and a closing signature at the bottom.

While printed letters are much rarer in business today with the introduction of email, you might still use block letter format when sending a letter formally, especially when changing it to a PDF format and using it as an attachment.
