Subject + to be + number + time + Adj(er) + than + obj

I think it’s a comparative sentence.  But I’m not sure.  Can you show me an example please?

You are correct!

We use the subject + to be + number + times + Adjective(er) +than + object sentence structure when we want to compare the object and the object in a sentence.

Let’s take a look at the example below:

  • I am four times stronger than my brother.

In the sentence above, I am comparing my own physical strength against my brothers physical strength. In the sentence above, I am saying that I am stronger than my brother but also that I am four times as strong as he is. So either I am very strong or my brother is extremely weak.

What about the sentence below:

  • the new restaurant is five time more expensive than the old restaurant.

That sentence means that if a meal cost $10 in the old restaurant, the same meal now costs $40 in the new restaurant.

Here are some more examples:

  • The new smartphone is ten times faster than the old smartphone. (the old smartphone must have been very slow if the new smart is ten times faster than it!)
  • The twins are one hundred times more trouble than their older sister.
  • “This year’s exam is ten times more difficult that last year’s exam” the teacher warned her students.

As you can see from the examples above, this particle sentence structure is a great way of exaggerating or emphasising a certain point.
