There is a difference in usage of these words in American and in British English.

In British English:

DependEnt is an adjective that means reliant on, contingent on or addicted to.

He is dependent on the financial support from his company.

The school is dependent on volunteer teachers this summer.

My best friend is dependent on heroin, and I’d love to help him.

DependAnt is a noun which means a person who is dependent on someone else. A child is dependent on his parents, so a child is a dependant of his parents.

Please, indicate in the form all of your dependants

My dependants are my spouse and my two children.

BUT in American English DEPENDENT is both an adjective and a noun.

He is dependent on his parents.

He is a dependent of his parents.
