It is a little less formal and would be most commonly heard in The USA rather than in Britain.
A: It’s raining today, that sucks!
B: Yeah but on the flip side, we can watch that new movie on TV.
A: I’m so sad, my friend cancelled his party tonight. I was looking forward to it.
B: Oh but on the flip side, you won’t be tired tomorrow!
This is a great phrase to cheer people up and make them look on the bright side of things rather than being pessimistic!
