“How you friend went to school?” Why is this sentence incorrect?

The correct sentence is “How did your friend go to school?” You must use the auxiliary verb do to form this question.

Did is the past tense of the verb do we use the auxiliary verb to indicate the tense and the person. That is why we use go instead of went in the question form.

Here are some more examples of questions with the auxiliary verb do

  • Does he go to school every day?
  • Did he go to school yesterday?
  • How do they travel to work?
  • How did they travel to Europe?
  • When does she arrive in France?
  • When did she arrive in France?
  • Do I have a class today?
  • Did I have a class yesterday?

As you can see from the examples above the auxiliary verb changes according to tense and person but the main verb such as go or travel remain in the infinitive.
