This is a thought-provoking question to answer because the number will continue to change and grow over time. Therefore to answer this question in a way that allows us to understand, let’s look at some figures beyond the immediate answer, which is?
As of 2017, an estimated 1,960,000,000 people use social media. By 2018, it is expected to grow to 2,500,000,000 people.
To truly understand how quick the growth of Social Media is, however, take Facebook, one of the most widely known and popular social media websites. In just twelve months it grew by 200 million users. That is almost 70,000,000 more people that were born last year alone.
Another way to answer this question would be to look at how many people have access to the internet in any form.
In 2015 the United Nations agency overseeing communications globally stated that more than 3,000,000,000 people have access to the internet.
And by 2019 it is expected that some 2,500,000,000 people will have a smartphone. These phones are capable of using Social Media applications if the user has a valid Internet Service Provider.
These numbers do not even include the billions of other computer and electronic devices capable of accessing and using Social Media websites and applications.
As of October 2017, the world has an estimated population of some 7,600,000,000. Looking at these numbers, we could probably assume that almost half the worlds population will use some form of Social Media in the not too distant future.
