How to get into Politics?

The exact process of getting into politics differs greatly depending on which country you live in. One of the best ways, though, is to get out and vote! If you have the right to vote, exercising it whenever there is an election is the simplest way to make a direct change in politics.

When there is no election, you can influence your elected officials by contacting them and letting them know how you feel on the issues. Most people just try to send a tweet or quick email, but these are not as effective as actually picking up the phone and calling them!

If you call, one of their staffers will have to pick up and chat with you, and the points that you make really are more effective.

If you are more dedicated to make a difference in politics, you can try to run for office or join a campaign. If you want to get elected and are in a democracy, getting into politics means that you typically need to work your way up through the system, starting small and at the local level.

This can mean trying to get elected to a school board or to city council at first. These are very local positions, which means that you will not have to do too much campaigning or shaking hands. The key is to get your name and face in front of as many people as possible, so you will need people – especially volunteers – who can help!

A lot of people make large signs to hang at busy intersections and go on local news programs so that people will pay attention to them.

If you get elected at the local level, then you can start to build your way up. Now that you have a track record, it becomes easier for people to recognize who you are. Studies show that a lot of local elections are just about name recognition, so it’s important to constantly be in the news and local discussions. Then you can start to run for mayor, state representative, etc.

To get involved more indirectly in politics, you can join a campaign. Most campaigns – from the local school board to president – require a lot of manpower. They need people to call voters for a discussion, pass out flyers, organize events and rallies, etc.

You can certainly find a volunteer chapter near where you live. The work that you do would directly contribute to recognition of your candidate, which would improve their chances of getting elected!
