When talking about somebody in English, it doesn’t matter if they are nearby or not. The only way you can refer to a third person is by using their name or a pronoun:

  • This is Clive.
  • He’s from the UK.
  • His surname is Owen.
  • I love him.
  • I’m Clive’s greatest fan.
  • This house is his.

  • This is Emma.
  • She was born in France.
  • Her surname is Watson.
  • I love her.
  • I’m Emma’s greatest fan.
  • This house is hers.
