We use approximately when we want to express that something is close in value or amount or is almost exact or correct but is not precise.

  • The journey will take approximately two hours.

There are many different ways to say approximately…here are some of them:

  • We arrived at around 5.00p.m.
  • You can expect to spend roughly $40 a day.
  • It will cost £30, give or take a few pounds.
  • We drank nearly three bottles of wine last night!
  • I earned somewhere in the region of $40,000 last year.
  • The office measures 8,000 square foot or thereabouts.
  • There was a sharp increase in immigration circa 1990.
  • The ballpark figure is €100,000.
  • I have loosely translated the document but it is not 100% accurate.
  • There are about 200 people at the event tonight!
  • If you keep driving for another 5km or so, you will arrive at the beach.
  • The fare will be €20, more or less.
