We felt very content or is it more correct to say very contented?

Actually, both words would be grammatically correct. It depends on what you want to express.

Content is both an adjective and a verb, so you could write the sentence either way. If you feel happy just because you feel happy (i e there is no particular reason for it), it might be better to use content.

If there is a specific reason or thing that is making you happy, you can say contented, because that makes your happiness the result of that thing. However, saying either one would work. There is no significant difference between them.
