Connectors are linking words or phrases which help us connect other words, phrases or sentences with each other. Connectors are important because they allow us to make compound sentences. Creating 1 sentence out of 2.
What are Connectors expressing Result?
Connectors for result or consequence link two simple sentences into a causative sequence. One scenario creates the next.
For example, without a connector we could write these two simple sentences:
- It started to rain heavily. The football match was cancelled.
When sentences are separated like this, we don’t know the relationship between them.
Was the game cancelled because of the rain? Or not? We can’t be sure. Let’s try combining the two sentences with a connector.
- It started to rain heavily, so the football match was cancelled.
See how this changes the meaning? Now we can be confident that the rain was the cause of the cancelled football game.

As a result (used in factual reporting)
- A typhoon warning has been issued for Japan. As a result, people are being asked to evacuate coastal towns.
Consequently
- The oil spill is causing damage to the immediate ecosystem and consequently harming the local fishing industry.
Thus, (used for formal occasions)
- The king had declared war, and thus his generals had to comply.
Therefore, (formal)
- Sarah is sick and therefore won’t come to the party tonight.
So (informal)
- There was nothing to eat in the fridge, so I ordered a pizza.
That’s why
- Many types of birds migrate to south for the winter, that’s why you don’t see many birds in New York during Christmas.
For this reason
- The baby was crying loudly, for this reason, we were asked to leave the cinema.
