Salient means important. Features are the characteristics or special ingredients which make up a thing. For example, a feature seen on any modern smartphone is their large touch screen.

A salient feature is a strong or dominant characteristic, tone, or theme something has. For example, salient features of South East Asian cuisine include its spiciness and use of rice.

So, salient features of literature mean important or dominant characteristics found in written pieces. Both prose and poetry have salient features.

Salient features in literature can be categorized into groups such as time periods, geographical locations, religions, specific authors, and many others such categories. For example, romantic poetry is different from Shakespeare, which is different from modern sci-fi novels.

The words used to express salient features of literature are most frequently adjectives. For example, Victorian literature is often sad, serious and pessimistic.
