A bound morpheme is a morpheme that only occurs when it’s part of another word, and never by itself. If we look at the word deodorize, we can break it down as follows.
de- + odor + –ize
You should immediately recognize that odor can occur by itself (meaning “smell”), and de- and -ize can’t, which means they must be the bound morphemes.
