Please list those countries!

We don’t normally use the definite article (the) before the names of countries when the name is a proper noun, like a person’s name:

  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Greece
  • Mexico
  • Egypt

Use THE if the country’s name includes words like kingdom, states or republic.
Also, when the name is a plural noun.
When the name is followed by OF.

Here are some examples:

  • The United States of America
  • The People’s Republic of China
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo
  • The Republic of Ireland
  • The United Kingdom
  • The United Arab Emirates
  • The Dominican Republic
  • The Czech Republic
  • The Central African Republic
  • The Netherlands
  • The (Commonwealth of the) Bahamas
  • The (Republic of the) Maldives
  • The (Republic of the) Philippines
