Why is recycling important?

Recycling is the process where you take things that you have used and repurpose them. Instead of throwing things away as trash, you can change them into something else that you can use.

The most common things that are recycled are paper, plastic (such as water bottles), and glass (such as glass bottles). By recycling things that you no longer need instead of throwing them away, you can reduce the amount of waste in the world.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, about 87 million tons of recycling and 254 million total tons of trash were throw away by Americans in 2013 (equivalent to about 34.3%). Much more of the trash could have been recycled.

This helps protect the environment because the trash that would rot in landfills is instead repurposed and given new life. The paper could be made into fresh paper for another purpose, and the plastic and glass could be melted down to make new plastic and glass items.
