Communication is the act of taking a message and transferring it. If you transfer the message to someone else, meaning another person, that is interpersonal communication!

As long as one person is giving a message to another – it can be a phone call, a letter, a short conversation, etc. – it is interpersonal communication.

What you should be most aware of is the fact that some messages that are given from one person to another is not interpersonal – if it is not direct enough.

For example, a TV news channel having its news show every night is not exactly interpersonal communication. While it technically is the communication of multiple people, the two parties are not equal. The TV channel is putting out information, and the watcher is able to view the show. However, there is no response or two way flow of information. For the TV show, only the viewer is learning something new. Since the news channel is not receiving a message and adjusting their message in accordance to the viewer’s reaction, this is not interpersonal communication even though one person is giving a message to another.
