Where do frogs go in the winter?

Frogs do not migrate large distances in the winter like other animals (i.e. many types of birds.) Instead, frogs hibernate in the same general area where they live most of their lives. They hibernate in a variety of places like in logs, rocks, or other safe places.

The common frog (Rana temporaria) hibernates through the winter in a fascinating way. These frogs many times will jump in a pond and spend their time either on top of the floor of the pond or partially nestled in the mud.

What is particularly amazing is that the frog will absorb the oxygen from the water through its skin. In this way, the pond serves as a safe and healthy place for frogs to hibernate.
