what is the difference in meaning between confidence & trust

It’s an interesting question! These terms are very similar.
 
CONFIDENCE
 
1. belief and certainty about someone or something (noun)
Use this word when you believe that someone is able to do something or that something will happen the they you want it.
 

  • I have confidence in you. = I believe you can do it.
    • I have every confidence in his ability to win.
    • He has confidence in the Lord.
    • We have confidence in our team.

 
2. in confidence = in secret
 

  • I told him in confidence. = I expect him not to tell anyone.
  • I was told in the strictest confidence.

 
 
TRUST
 
1. believe that someone will do the right thing (verb)
 

  • I would trust him with my life.
  • Of course I can talk to her about it. I trust her.
  • Don’t tell Greg. I don’t trust him.

 
2. in the trust = in someone’s care (noun)
 

  • The baby was placed in the trust of foster parents.
  • They want to leave the money in the trust of their broker.
