We should work very hard for the project. We may not get the prize.

These two sentences may be joined with the conjunction otherwise:

  • We should work very hard for the project, otherwise we may not get the prize.

Otherwise means or else/ if not, and is used when stating what the results would be if something didn’t happen.

Here are some more examples:

  • I had to borrow some money, otherwise I couldn’t have bought the tickets.
  • Peter would really like to succeed in business, otherwise he wouldn’t be working on Sundays.
  • Please shut the windows before you leave. Otherwise, it will be freezing in here tomorrow morning.
