None IS or ARE

The pronoun “none” means “no part of” or “not any of”. It can be used together with both singular and plural verb forms, depending on the context:
 

  • None of his books is good. (not even one is good)
  • None of his books are good. (all of them are bad)

 

  • None of the girls is coming to the party. (not even one girl)
  • None of the girls are coming to the party. (all of them are staying away)

 

  • None of my relatives understands me. (not even one person)
  • None of my relatives understand me. (all of them don’t understand me)
