uncountable nouns

I have no knowledges or information whatsoever about antique furnitures and jewelleries.

Can you spot the mistakes in the sentence above? Iโ€™ll give you a clue: there are four letters too many. Yes, itโ€™s the letterย S! Can you say knowledges? No, you canโ€™t. Why? This word, just like information, furniture and jewellery, hasย NO PLURAL FORM.

I have no knowledge or information whatsoever about antique furniture and jewellery.

Sounds much better, doesnโ€™t it?

Most words that have no plural form areย uncountableย which means, not surprisingly, that you cannot count them. Unfortunately, the concept of what is countable and what is not, varies from language to language.

For example,ย BREADย may be countable in your language, but not in English. So, you canโ€™t say
โ€˜My gorilla had fifteen breadsย for breakfast.โ€™ย

The correct form is:
โ€˜My gorilla had fifteen loaves of bread for breakfast.โ€™ย

Notice that the wordย breadย doesnโ€™t end with -s in the correct version. Thatโ€™s because it has no plural form.

As you might see, all the words in the above list are followed by SINGULAR VERBS. Thatโ€™s because theyโ€™re uncountable.

However, there are also some COUNTABLE NOUNS that have NO PLURAL FORMS. To be more precise, they have plural forms, but theย plural forms are the same as the singular ones.

Because of their being countable, these nouns may be followed by PLURAL VERBS:

SHEEP
FISH
SALMON
DEER
SWINE
OFFSPRING
AIRCRAFT

  • When I canโ€™t sleep, I count sheep. One sheep,ย two sheep, three sheep, one hundred sheep.
  • Master Bruce keptย five fishย in the pond. He named them after his favourite superheroes.

  • Myย two deerย follow me everywhere.
  • Look! There are someย swineย in the mud.
  • I want to haveย ten offspringย (children).
  • I think Ironman needs two moreย aircraft.

ย
There are also some nouns that look plural, but in fact, they are uncountable ones in disguise. You canโ€™t trust them at all. Remember to follow these nouns with singular verbs:

NEWS
BILLIARDS
MATHEMATICS
PHYSICS
MEASLES

  • Theย news isย worrying.
  • Billiards isย my favourite game.
  • Mathematics isย not my forte.
  • Physics isย difficult too.
  • Measles isย a really nasty respiratory disease.

Finally, letโ€™s look at the rare occasions when uncountable nouns are used with plural forms:

  • Hannibal Lecter drinks only the best ofย wines.
  • I donโ€™t know much about localย cheeses.

In the above sentences WINES means different TYPES of wine. Similarly, CHEESES refers to different TYPES of cheese.

Hi! I just want to make sure about the spelling of two words that are on your list of Uncountable Nouns โ€“ โ€œaccomodationโ€ and โ€œaggresionโ€. You spelled these two words with one โ€œmโ€ and one โ€œsโ€, respectively. I believe that the correct spelling for both words are โ€œaccommodationโ€ and โ€œaggressionโ€.

Can you help me? Is there a plural form for ketchup, like ketchupS? If none, is it right to say โ€œthree plastics of ketchupโ€?

Also, why is the word โ€œMAILโ€ an uncountable noun? Can you not say โ€œYou have 2 mails in your mailbox.โ€?

Thank you in advance for your response. ๐Ÿ™‚
