Am I using ‘subterfuge’ correctly?

She bribed her husband’s doctor into the subterfuge of giving him medicine that was actually poison.

The word subterfuge means the same thing as “manipulation” or “sabotage”. For any sentence that has subterfuge, you should be able to substitute these more common synonyms to check if it makes sense.

Unfortunately, it does NOT make sense to say “the subterfuge of” something. In addition, it’s a little unclear about who is doing the manipulating. Clearly, the woman has evil intentions.

However, is she the one who is leading the sabotage, and the doctor has no bad intentions? Is the doctor just caught in a bad position?

The best way to clarify what you mean is by rephrasing the sentence to this:

  • She used subterfuge and bribery to convince her husband’s doctor to give him poison that was disguised as medicine.
