What are the difference between these types of houses?

Detached house vs semi-detached house vs terraced house

There are many different types of houses and homes which can often be confused with one another.  I have explained the differences between some of the buildings below.

What’s the difference between an apartment, studio, and penthouse?

An apartment or a flat (this is the British English term), is a living space with at least one bedroom, bathroom and living room along with a kitchen and bathroom. A flat or apartment differs from a house as this type of housing unit is one unit in a building of many other housing units. For example, an apartment building could have ten stories with three apartments on each storey. This means that there are thirty different units in the one apartment building.

Apartment buildings are very common in big cities where there isn’t enough space for everybody to live in their own house. Apartments usually only consist of one floor but this can vary. Some may have their own balconies, other apartment buildings provide private parking, doormen, laundry rooms and sometimes even swimming pools!

Many apartment buildings have penthouses on the top floor. A lot of the time, penthouses a more spacious than a regular apartment as a penthouse could take up the whole top floor.

A studio is very similar to an apartment but slightly smaller and there is usually only one person living in the studio. The bedroom, living room, and kitchen are all in one big room, the sections are sometimes separated by furniture. The bathroom is in a separate room.

What’s the difference between a detached house, a semi-detached house, and a terraced house?

A detached house is a building that doesn’t have any other building attached to it, it stands on its own.

However, a semi-detached house is a building that shares a wall with another house. These houses usually look very similar to each other on the outside, almost like they are mirroring each other. These types of houses only share one wall, on the other side of the house, the building wall is exposed with nothing attached to it

A terraced house is part of a row of houses that share both sides of the building with another building. These houses look identical to each other. There can be ten to twenty houses attached to one another in a row.
