Client vs Customer vs Consumer

These words all mean the same thing!
Client, customer and consumer are all words that businesses use to talk about people that buy their products.

Client is generally used for a more personal, individualised service. Lawyers, car salespeople and estate agents all use the word “client“.

  • I’m currently dealing with a wealthy client who wants to enquire about VIP service.

Customer is a very general term used by most businesses and shops. Retailers and big stores would be the most common place to use this term.

  • Our customers expect great quality of service and great prices.

Consumer is another more impersonal term for people that buy a product. Consumer is a term not only used by businesses but also organisations that study the trends in the population.

  • We have seen that many consumers do not want to travel by train anymore, they prefer using their cars.
