Boo typically is known as the sound that a ghost makes when it wants to scare someone. If it is trying to find a way to amuse itself or laugh, it can say “boo”! That said, some of the idioms or idiomatic phrases that we use with this word include:

Not say boo (to someone, to a goose, to a fly)

This means that someone is extremely shy and timid. They are too scared to speak up in any situation, even if they just need to say something to a creature as small as a goose or a fly!

  • He is so shy that he would not say boo to a fly.

Boo someone off the stage

In this phrase, the word “boo” refers to the call that people can say to others when they are unhappy about something. If I “boo” someone, that means that I am unhappy about what they are doing. Instead of asking them politely to stop, I can boo them and let them know that they are so bad that I do not want to keep watching or seeing them anymore.

If you boo someone off the stage, it can be extremely humiliating for the person who was performing. Instead of waiting until they finish their performance, you would only boo someone if you thought that they were so bad you could not listen to them at all anymore!

  • After Michael was booed off the stage, he decided that he needed to take acting more seriously and started to devote a ton of time to it.
