GET RID OF SOMETHING means throw away something (or even somebody), becuse you don’t need it anymore. It’s an informal word, so don’t use it in formal contexts.
- Where’s your Mickey Mouse T-shirt? Why don’t you ever wear it?
- I’ve got rid of it. It was too small.
- Why don’t you get rid of that wardrobe? It’s enormous and your bedroom is too small.
- Have you heard that Jake’s cheated on Abbey? I think she should get rid of him.
