What does 'get rid of' mean?

GET RID OF SOMETHING means throw away something (or even somebody), becuse you don’t need it anymore. It’s an informal word, so don’t use it in formal contexts.
 

  • Where’s your Mickey Mouse T-shirt? Why don’t you ever wear it?
  • I’ve got rid of it. It was too small.
  • Why don’t you get rid of that wardrobe? It’s enormous and your bedroom is too small.
  • Have you heard that Jake’s cheated on Abbey? I think she should get rid of him.
