What does the idiom “put my foot in my mouth” mean?

It is an idiom used when somebody says something inappropriate or offensive without realising.

This could be used in a number of different situations and is quite a funny idiom!

A: That girl over there looks hot, don’t you think?

B: That’s my sister!

A: Well, it looks like I’ve just put my foot in my mouth!

This idiom can be used to make an awkward situation easier to handle as you can see from the example above.
