Avidity vs Greed

Avidity means wanting to get something very much:

  • Uncle Jack’s avidity was insatiable. He laid his hands on all the neighbouring properties.
  • Nothing can save us from the avidity of the ruling party.

However, it is also used to mean enthusiasm:

  • Sheila studied with avidity and passed all her exams.
  • I love Sherlock Holmes. I read all his stories with avidity.

Greed, on the other hand, is not used positively. It describes a strong desire for more wealth and possessions than you actually need:

  • I’m afraid he doesn’t love you. His actions are just motivated by greed.
  • Their greed for power turned them into monsters.
