Reading can be difficult and it practices different skills away from speaking but it can mainly help to improve your vocabulary. A good way of doing things is to use a notebook and write down the main new words you come across. That way you can look them up in a dictionary or online and learn them for our own use.
It might even be a good idea to start with children’s books and then advance as you get better. It will be difficult if you choose to pick up a novel and try to read it as you will have to be stopping to write things down every couple of minutes.
