I played is the verb to play in the first person singular in the simple past tense. We use the simple past tense when we want to talk about an action that occurred in the past but also finished in the past. For example:

  • I played football yesterday.
  • I didn’t play football yesterday.
  • Did he play with the children at the birthday party last week.
  • He played with the children at the birthday party last week.
  • Did you visit Europe last year?.
  • We didn’t visit Europe last year.

To be played is a colloquial expression, in English we use it when we want to say we were tricked or conned into believing somebody’s intentions are good and honest. For example;

  1. I was played by him, he said he loved me and I believed him.
  2. Kevin, they are playing you, they say that they will pay you back soon but have no intention of paying you.
  3. The company played you, they made you believe they would hire you so you would tell them all their competitors secrets.

The first example is talking about situation that started and ended in the past. She was played by him, she wastricked into believing his intentions were good but in reality he was being dishonest with her.
In the second example, the expression is being used the continuous present tense. They are telling him they will pay him back the money. They are pretending their intentions are honest but they are deceiving Kevin. The use of the continuous present tense shows us this is an ongoing event and is happening right now.
The third example is talking about a situation in the past where a company told the person that he would be hired if he told them their competitors secrets. The company deceived the person and made him give them confidential information.
