What is the meaning of idiom “a guy who can fax himself places”?

This is a line from the American television program Modern Family.  A guy who can fax himself places is not an idiom. We can’t look at the sentence figuratively, we must look at it literally.
 
A fax machine is a machine that passes on or transmits printed material (that has been scanned) telephonically. In this scene of Modern Family they are talking about a movie idea, the plot being a man having the ability to fax himself places. I assume in this movie, the man would be able to send himself from one fax machine to another.
