Present has many meanings and can be used in many different ways, serving different functions.
 
1) We can use present as a noun to refer to a gift given to somebody usually to thank them or wish them a happy birthday or Christmas for example.
Did you get a birthday present for John?
What present would you like for Christmas?
I gave the teacher a present at the end of term to say thank you.
 
2) We can use present as a noun as to mean now or a period of time that is occurring at this time, right now.
There’s no time like the present.
We must live in the present and not worry about the past.
 
3) Present can also be used as an adjective to mean now
I don’t have my homework at present.
The students are not present.
 
4) Present can be used as a verb to describe the action of giving a gift or an award to somebody.
The principal presented the award to the Student of the Year.
They were presented with a bonus at the end of the year.
 
5) Present can be used as a verb to describe the action of showing something. For example,
The policeman presented his badge at the crime scene.
The salesman in the showroom presented the newest models to the customer.
 
6) Present can be used as a verb to describe the action of demonstrating or talking formally about a project or an idea. For example,
He presented his pitch to the board of directors.
The student present her project to the class.
