Taught is the past tense and past participle of the verb to teach.

For example:

  • The teacher taught them English grammar yesterday, today she will teach English writing skills.
  • His grandfather taught him all he needed to know about car engines.
  • They were taught how to play the piano by their music teacher when they were younger.
  • I was taught how to cook by my grandmother.

Whereas think is the present simple and infinitive of the verb to think. The verb to think means to have an idea or a belief about something or someone.

Here are some examples:

  • I think I will go to the cinema today.
  • They didn’t think they would ever see each other again.
  • Do you think there will be a test tomorrow?
  • We think we should go to the beach this weekend. What do you think?
  • I think about going back to college one day.

The past tense and past participle of the verb to think is thought. Thought sounds quite similar to taught and can cause some confusion for language learners.

Here are some examples of thought:

  • He thought the exam was difficult but his friends thought the exam was easy.
  • I thought I would live in this city forever but now I’m not so sure.
  • They thought they would go to college after high school but now they think they want to travel first.
  • We thought going to the beach was a good idea but then we saw the weather forecast and decided to stay inside as a storm was coming.
