Most of the bees take short break in the winter.

Lesser flower source and colder weather makes the benefits low for the bees to collect honey in the winter. They consume too much energy and collect little honey. There are a few bees which live in warmer areas collect honey in the winter.

However, they do not collect much. Normally, 1/3 of the bees die when going outside their hive.

Bees which stay in their hive usually focus on decreasing the consumption of food and increase the core temperature of the hive. But how? Bees are poikilothermal (cold-blooded) animal — their body temperature alter according to the environment.

When the temperature in the hive is slightly lower than 13℃(55℉), they gather and form a sphere. The lower the temperature is, the closer they stick together. Therefore, less heat will be loss.
