The Hawaiian alphabet is the writing system that exists for the Hawaiian language – used on the Islands of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean and part of the United States. There have been several versions of the Hawaiian alphabet over time, but it now consists of 13 total letters. The five vowels are a, e, i, o, and u like in English. There are only eight consonants, which are h, k, l, m, n, p, w, and ‘okina. The names of the letters do not follow the names that we call letters in English or any other language – they are unique to Hawaiian.
