Rising intonation at the end of questions is used when we’re expecting a Yes or No answer.
For example:

  • Have you seen my glasses?

or when asking for further clarification:

  • Where did you say they were?

Falling intonation, on the other hand, is used when the question is not answerable by Yes or No. (Wh-questions)
For example:

  • Where do you live?
  • What time is it?

Answers and statements usually end in falling intonation – this may vary slightly depending on the speaker’s accent and personal speech patterns.
