destruction vs demolition

The nouns destruction and demolition have slightly different meanings but broadly speaking they refer to the act of damaging something like a building, a car, a picture frame and so on.

The noun destruction refers to the act of wrecking or damaging something. This damage is so bad that the object cannot be repaired or reconstructed.

Demolition on the other hand, refers to the deliberate destruction or damaging or something. If you think of the demolition of old buildings, these old buildings are deliberately torn down to build new buildings or for various other reasons such as health and safety. Buildings are usually demolished by bulldozers, wrecking balls or with explosives.

Below are examples sentences of how the two nouns can be used in English:

  • The destruction caused by the earthquake means that it will take years for the country to rebuild and recover.
  • The family was lucky they survived the house fire but they don’t feel very lucky as the fire resulted in a lot of destruction.
  • The local community was very disappointed to see the demolition of a historical building in their town. The builders broke the building apart and tore it down completely.
  • The reason for the demolition of the bridge was to ensure a safe passage over the river. A new bridge will be built where the old bridge stood.

Destruction and demolition are not limited to the physical wrecking or harming of something, the nouns can also refer to the harming of relationships, organisations and so on.

For example:

  • The destruction of their friendship meant that they would never have a good relationship again.
  • The demolition of the religious organisation was purposely planned out by a rival group.
